Petra Teslerova

At the age of 18, I went to the UK, for an intended stay of three months and ended up staying almost three years. I returned to the Czech Republic, my native country, and enrolled in a university teaching program where I received my Master’s degree in English. Since then, apart from the Czech Republic, I have lived and worked in Mexico, USA and finally Thailand.

I am very passionate about travel and experiencing different cultures. I have traveled to and through twenty-five countries scattered over four continents. I hitchhiked across Northwest Africa, stayed with a traditional Mayan family in a Guatemalan jungle, climbed several active volcanoes of Central America, explored organic coffee plantations in Nicaragua and tracked the Mountain Gorillas in East Africa. Last summer, I started volunteering for a non-profit organization empowering orphaned teenage girls and young women in Rwanda. I am also a very serious hiker, downhill skier and lately have invested fair amount of time to learning yoga. I love to read, watch and discuss independent films and write about my travels.

This year, I am delighted to work at QSI, Phuket, teaching 7/8 and 12/13 year old Cultural Studies, 13 year old Reading/Language Arts, and Secondary II Modern World History class.

QSI provides an excellent opportunity to broaden my experiences working with a wonderful mix of many different nationalities and their respective cultures within the student body, and also within the context of this wonderful supportive environment consisting of a team of highly experienced and dedicated professionals.

QSI – Math and Science Teacher

Born in California, but was raised in Oregon, I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon. I later went on to receive my Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Colorado at Boulder and graduated in May of 2012. Mr. Buckley, this one’s for you…Go Buffs!

I would like to say that I have been on this incredible teaching journey in which my students became astronauts, doctors, managers, lawyers, hospitality employees, or whatever career path life takes them, but I would be lying to you. QSI is not only the first international school I have taught at, but it is also the place, in which I am honored to say, where my teaching career begins. I am currently teaching Math 12, Algebra I, Advanced Math I, Physical Science, and Earth Science. I am also assisting with football and basketball for the 2012-2013 school year.

When I am not busy planning for class, teaching about linear equations, or eating canned tuna, I enjoy the many outdoor activities Thailand has to offer. Since moving to the “Land of Smiles” in August of 2012, I have explored the many beaches and scenic life Phuket has to offer. Ever since my journey around the world by boat on Semester at Sea, I have acquired a tremendous passion for traveling, meeting new people, and experiencing new cultures. I am extremely happy to call both Phuket and QSI my “home away from home.”

I am very fortunate about the opportunity to develop as a teacher within this community based atmosphere of QSI. The students are great, the faculty and staff members are wonderful, the parent support is above the rest, the weather is unbeatable, and the Pad Thai is delicious! Let the adventures begin…

Matthew Chipman

Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, I received my undergraduate degree in English from the University of Georgia and then headed north to the University of Vermont for my Master’s in English. While studying in Vermont, I began the 12+ year teaching odyssey that has brought me to QSI Phuket, a remarkable institution that continues to surprise, delight, and inspire me due to my learned colleagues and a diverse, vibrant student body. I am currently teaching US History, 12-yr-old Reading/Language Arts, World Geography, Dramatic Arts, and World Governments/Economics. I host Film Club, coach basketball, and will direct a play during the Spring 2013 term.

My outside interests are varied and eclectic. I have been a professional disc golfer, taught canoeing in the Adirondack Mountains, worked as a roofer on a Seminole reservation in Okeechobee, FL, posed as a ski bum in Snowmass, CO, shucked crabs on a Eureka, CA dock, and counseled juvenile delinquents at an outdoors rehabilitation center in the North Georgia mountains. I love to hike, observe flora and fauna, leisurely canoe strange rivers, and breathe the air of new, exotic places. I particularly look forward to my stay in Thailand for the plethora of outdoor experiences scattered across the region. When not outside or prowling my classroom, I love to read, listen to music, and study the hierophantic complexities and metapsychological overtones of the ubiquitous Fox News.
